Adjunct Faculty
WesternU distinctive: The Community Health Education concentration in the MSHS program is ideal for working professionals in public, private and nonprofit sectors (or for those who want to work in the field). Classes are taught at night by experienced faculty who have hands-on knowledge of developing, funding and administering effective community health education programs. With evening and weekend classes offered, it's ideal for adults who want to enhance their skills in community health education.
Most valuable aspect of a WesternU education: Because Western University is a medical school, students in the MSHS program will have a chance to interact with students who are working in a variety of health professions to further their understanding and ability to develop effective programs that work in a variety of health settings.
Western University prepares students to be health education leaders who can design, implement, advocate for, and evaluate efforts to promote healthy behaviors and social conditions.
Tina Meyer, DHSc(c), MS, PA-C
Chair, Department of Health Sciences Education & Assistant Professor, Department of PA Education
WesternU distinctive: The MSHS degree brings people together from all disciplines as teachers of health professions and patient educators. This interdisciplinary environment is very rich in collaborative learning by nature.
Beyond the classroom: I supervise clinical days for PCHAT and am also the advisor of a new student club that is currently being formed that will focus on physical medicine, rehabilitation and long term disability issues. I am a consultant and speaker for the CDIHP, teaching clinicians and others to better care for persons with disability.
Value of a WesternU education: Collaborations with other disciplines, patient centered approach to teaching and learning, and the opportunity to benefit the community with our skills.
Best advice: WesternU is a great place to stretch and grow, especially for people who understand that in the larger scheme of things, quality healthcare affects us and our loved ones in profound ways.
On interprofessional education: IPE allows us to view issues from a vantage point other than our own. IPE prepares students to function in health care teams which ultimately benefit patients and families by utilizing collective knowledge and strengths.

Simone Yik, MS, PharmD
MSHS-HPE, Class of 2004
"I enrolled in the Health Professions Education program to be able to have the skills as a good clinician in patient counseling. The program helped me learn the tools to be able to teach my colleagues in the health professions. The program has taught me, first and foremost, good communication skills. It has helped me learn to communicate effectively to an audience, with new technological tools and media that are available to instructors. I have learned the background of what is required to create a curriculum, and how to subsequently implement it. I highly recommend this program to anyone who is interested in expanding their role as an educator in the health professions."
Amber Edwards-Singletary, MS, PA-C
MSHS-HPE, Class of 2004
My experience at WesternU was wonderful, both in the PA studies program and the Masters of Health Sciences program. The staff was experienced and personable. I especially appreciated the fact that every student and their progress/success mattered. We were known by our names and not just as a "number." Overall, I'd be willing to say, that my experience was the rule and not the exception.
During my time at WesternU, I had many great teachers/mentors (Dr. Stephanie Bowlin, Amelia-Naccarto-Coleman and Nancy Nielsen-Brown, to name a few) who were always available to "coach" and encourage and ultimately bring out the best in me.
Giving honor where it is due, Dr. Bowlin was the single most influential person in my professional development. She is dynamic, professional, caring, intelligent and sincere. She made learning fun, but always demanded that I do my best. She lives by a higher standard and is not afraid of challenge. She is humble and promotes the importance of respecting and valuing the support and contributions of every member of the health care team. She is a true role model and WesternU is fortunate to have her.
Keep up the great work WesternU!
