A Week in the Life of a Podiatric Medicine Student

First Two Years
Class Time: Your class time will consist of lectures, skills and practice workshops, in-class assignments, discussion of case studies in teams, team presentations, exams and quizzes.
Studying: Professors provide you with electronic copies of the lectures, so studying often consists of reviewing these handouts along with class notes, reviewing case studies, studying in groups, and reading assigned chapters in textbooks.
Community Service: Foot health screening and other service-learning projects are an integral part of the first year of medical education at WesternU. In the second year you will have numerous opportunities to continue community service activities with other WesternU students.
Last Two Years
Clinical Rotations: In the third and fourth years, you will complete hospital and outpatient rotations through all of the major medical disciplines. There are 88 weeks of rotations over the two years that focus on primary care and specialty medicine. You will also have the chance to participate in elective rotations, including those in international settings during the fourth year; this heavy emphasis on clinical experience will serve you well during your postdoctoral training.
In between bedside visits, you will read up on procedures and treatments that you are providing, as well as practice techniques such as suturing and surgical knots. Also, board exams require attention and study time.
Non-Academic Time
For long weekends or during spring and winter breaks, you can go home to see your family, ski, or maybe take a trip to Las Vegas. There are many cultural and recreational things to do when you live in Southern California, so our students try to take advantage of them when they can.
